Hygge Home Design Trends to Warm up Your Winter

The colder weather is here we’re thinking about cosy and rustic home décor ideas. So what changes should we be making in our homes over the next few months?

How hygge can inspire your winter home decorating ideas

There’s one Danish word that perfectly encapsulates the sense of burrowing in for winter. Hygge is the feeling of contentedness, nostalgia or cosiness. It can be brought on by anything from mulled wine to a soft reading chair, to candlelit dinners. In an interior style sense, hygge points to anything warm and indulgent, so here are our rustic home ideas for this year’s winter interior design trends:

  • Introduce lush textiles
This year we’re seeing lots of decadent fabrics being introduced into homes, particularly in deep jewel tones of jade, turquoise, violet and blue. That doesn’t mean you need to cover your couches and beds with fluffy fabric. Instead, try including small touches of warm home décor such as tactile velvet cushions, a chunky wool throw or a bedspread with oversized tassels to add warmth and depth to the room. Anything that will make reading or watching a movie even more enjoyable is right on the hygge mark.
  • Create a cosy kitchen
Laughter and discussions around the dining table with family and friends evokes hygge, as is having people hang out in the kitchen with the cook as they whip up the evening meal. Your cooking and dining spaces should be styled just as much for comfort as they are for function. If you are remodelling with winter home décor, choose cushioned chairs, soft rugs underfoot and a large table to create comfortable space for whiling away the hours over good conversation.
  • Keep it warm and bright
The nights are longer throughout the cooler months, and that’s the perfect opportunity to focus on light in your home. Scandinavian countries tend to have a lot of light sources – in Sweden that’s as many as 42 in the average home – so embrace the comforting warm glow of low-lit lamps in your living spaces. Better yet, collect a group of candles on your coffee table for dreamy evenings curled up on the couch.
  • Bring bliss to your bathrooms
What could be cosier than a decadent bubble bath as the rain falls outside? Get your hygge on by introducing fluffy new towels in bright jewel colours, soft bathrobes, natural wooden accessories and a bath shelf to hold a book and a glass of wine.
