Magazines, social media like Pinterest and interior designers’ project galleries are great places to explore. The first step to finding your preferred design style is discovering things you like, and things you don’t.
Tip 2: Research the different design styles
Once you’ve pulled out a few inspirational pics, it’s a good idea to place them within a design style. Research the different interior design trends out there and see where your favourites fit. Being able to name the design style you love can also help you to explain it to staff in interiors stores, allowing them to help you find the best pieces quickly.

Tip 3: Use your wardrobe for colour inspiration
Ever noticed that you wardrobe is full of clothes in the same or similar colours? We all have natural colour preferences and our wardrobe can be a great place to get acquainted with our favourites. This can help you narrow down if you’re into more of a neutral palette, coastal blues and stripes or luxurious jewelled tones.
Tip 4: Find similarities in your preferred design styles
We did say before that you should stick to the one style, but that doesn’t mean you can’t play a little within those lines. Minimalist and coastal design have some similarities in their colour palettes and use of natural materials. Luxury design elements, such as a furry throw rug, can find a home in many design styles as a form of texture. Looking for similarities in design style can give you more room to play. Try to stick to embodying one design style overall, but feel free to experiment with accents and accessories that you love.
