It’s official – the new Pantone colour for 2018 is Ultra Violet. This vivid hue echoes the concepts of originality, imagination and innovation that have long been associated with the colour purple, as these values are now more important than ever in propelling us into a sustainable and socially-aware future. So what other colours will be inspiring interior designers and those looking to restyle their home in the new year?
It looks like there will be plenty of earthy, nature-inspired colours to incorporate into your interior styling. We seem to be leaning towards an honest and authentic aesthetic in all aspects, inspired by the embracing of Scandi-style slow living via hygge as well as the love of raw construction materials such as cork, timbers and copper. These influences will be shining through in tones of terracotta, linen and natural browns.
Earthy jewel colours are also here in force at major design shows, taking much influence from mid-century tones for a modern reinvention of the family home. We are already seeing musky pinks, rich blues and burgundies taking centre stage in sofas, feature walls and kitchen splashbacks. A more playful angle on the vintage vibe is encouraged too, with cool green and bright yellow adding fresh punches where needed such as on cushions or vases.
Vintage-cool colours will tie in wonderfully with the new interest in understated luxury – and chances are you will see accessories available with touches of velvet and even fringing. If you’re looking for colour ideas for the bedroom or living spaces, don’t be afraid to indulge a little with a dusky pink feature wall or a pair of lush emerald floor-length curtains. Just remember – in 2018, it will be all about keeping this opulence minimal.
